Impact of COVID-19 on the Milk Livestock of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, Ecuador

Abstract

<p>In order to address the immediate impact of COVID-19 on dairy farming in the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, Ecuador, qualitative longitudinal research was carried out, supported by the structured interview of 86 producers belonging to the Association of Cattlemen of the province. The qualitative variables (health management and impact of COVID-19) were analyzed through statistical frequencies (absolute and relative), and their distribution was compared through chi-square tests and likelihood ratio, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was found that the variables of antiparasitic product for adult bovines (p ˂ 0.05) and frequency of deworming of young bovines (p ˂ 0.01) were affected by the condition derived from the COVID-19 pandemic. 46% of the producers were infected by COVID-19, and more than 70% of them have had at least one family member and one worker infected. The COVID-19 pandemic forced producers to modify their work plan in the sanitary management of dairy cattle, particularly immunization plans and deworming strategies. Therefore, the resilience shown by the producers was essential for the continuity of the livestock activity.</p>
