Canine polyradiculoneuropathy due to Toxoplasma ssp: Case report

Abstract

An unsterilized and unvaccinated six-month-old mixed-race female canine from the rural area of Apartadó-Antioquia was admitted to the clinic due to difficulty walking with an evolution time of two months and worsening of the signs. During clinical evaluation, he presented with inability to sit up, body condition score 2/5 with evidence of muscle atrophy, bilateral blindness, and nystagmus. Neurological evaluation revealed spastic tetraparesis, increased superficial sensitivity for the forelimbs and hindlimbs with a crossed extensor response for the latter. For causal confirmation, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was collected by puncture in the atlanto-occipital space for analysis by real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) by 18S rDNA amplification with a positive result for Toxoplasma spp The objectives of the case report are to describe the methodology used to arrive at the causal diagnosis of a pathology little taken into account within the differential of central nervous affection in canines, as well as with the diagnosis; calling for prospective epidemiological surveillance studies of a zoonotic pathology.
