Effect of antiseptic solutions on oral biofilm microbiota of canines (Canis familiaris)

Abstract

The oral microbiota of canines is composed of polymicrobial communities that, under homeostatic conditions, play a significant role in maintaining the oral health status. However, when this balance is altered, these communities change, which leads to the development of different conditions, such as periodontal disease. The objective of this work was to assess the antimicrobial effect of antiseptic solutions, used regularly for oral hygiene procedures in canines (Canis familiaris), on the oral biofilm microbiota. This work was divided into two phases: the first phase consisted of an in vitro experimental assay to determine the antimicrobial activity of three oral antiseptic solutions using chlorhexidine as the main active component. During phase II, a longitudinal, intervention procedure was performed using 24 canines divided into 3 groups; every group received a different oral antiseptic solution for 30 days. Oral biofilm was collected at different time intervals and the percentage of biofilm inhibition was calculated. The in vitro antimicrobial effect of all the solutions was similar and the inhibition haloes did not show any significant differences. After topical application, it was observed that antiseptic solution 1 showed a more consistent and homogeneous biofilm reduction when compared to solutions 2 and 3. In vivo, all three solutions exhibited a significant antimicrobial activity. Therefore, the regular use of antiseptic solutions significantly reduced the formation of oral biofilm in canines.
