Extraskeletal Chondrosarcoma in a Free-living Common Pigeon (Columba livia) from an Urban Area

Abstract

Chondrosarcoma, a type of malignant neoplasm that producing fibrillary matrix and hyalin cartilage, is described in many species, but it is little known in synanthropic birds. This manuscript discusses a clinical case of a male domestic pigeon (Columba livia) of free-living in Bogota, Colombia, rescued in Phase II of the Alas District Project (Agreement 296 of 2019) and referred to the Centro de Atención de Palomas (CAP - Pigeon Care Center), with a tumor injury in one of its wings, whose diagnosis was of extraskeletal chondrosarcoma. Cancer in animals occurs by the convergence of multiple internal and external factors, among which human pressure on the environment could be modify oncogenic mechanisms in different species. This report makes a new and important contribution to the knowledge of avian health, comparing the diagnosis with other cases, and raising hypothesis on possible causes such as pollution and diet. Also it proposes working under the One Health approach, to identify other predisposing, epidemiological and environmental factors, in order to preserve global health and assest whether pigeons would be sanitary quality sentinels in urban areas of Colombia.
